There are a lot of alternatives to the well-known expensive parts and materials that we use to run and maintain our boats. These would products that the posters have actually used and found satisfactory

Re : Jbarnes85
That Aerosil looks like fumed silica to me or cabosil. I bought some from this place. I am pretty sure the 250g bag at $9 was about 5L making it very cheap. Very hard stuff.

trojanfibreglass.com.au/product/fumed-silica/

Someone should start a DIY boat hacks page. I am pretty sure half the paints are just house paints but many times more expensive

A good format (to cut to the chase ) would be:
Product
Supplier
Price

Product Epoxy filler
Supplier trojanfibreglass.com.au/product/fumed-silica/
Price (approx) 250g bag at $9 was about 5L

That's a great idea Gary!!

May I suggest adding
Comment (optional): eg-
often have specials on woven cloth,
or,
but the resin was cheaper at (insert supplier)

just a thought

I guess the problem is that with some products you don't find out whether they were any good until 5 or 10 years or more down the track

Product: Epoxy filler
Supplier: trojanfibreglass.com.au/product/fumed-silica/
Price: $9 for 250g which is a large amount/volume, perhaps 5L or so.
Comments: I believe this is similar or the same as West Systems 406 Colloidal Silica or Cabosil. It is a very very hard and strong filler, sanding is very very difficult. I have used it for medium transom repairs, minor deck repairs and a few other minor jobs. It is very hard so its best to avoid the need to sand it afterwards. I used an electric file (like a mini belt sander) to sculpt the shape afterwards which works well.

This is true. But most chemical products (paints, lubricants, solvents) have numerous applications and its the application of a products that is the Intellectual Property. Many of the boat products would be used for many applications. I highly doubt West Systems or any boat product manufacturer would be making all of their products. There just wouldn't be the volumes to justify running manufacturing facilities and everything that goes along with it. For some of their products I would suspect they are buying a product in bulk (that has many other applications/markets) and packaging it down. Fumed silica is probably just a commodity.

But yes I wouldnt go and paint the deck of my boat in house paint...... Even though I have heard many people use Wattle paints. Its the time that is expensive... not the products.

Product: Outboard parts (mainly Parsun, but other brands too)
Supplier: www.parsunparts.com/
Price: Varies, but all seems reasonable
Comments: I had huge trouble in Perth finding someone who would service my Parsun outboard - so went with a DIY approach. This site lists ALL the parts of the outboards using exploded workshop diagrams. Purchase online and they will ship direct to you.

Here's my 2 bob's worth for Yanmar 2GM owners. Probably also useful for other GM variants, but you'd need to confirm. The savings vary but are very significant on impellers and filters, which are about 1/3 OEM prices. For your reassurance, all these bits have been working perfectly in my engine for some years now.

Filters:
Lube Oil: LF3462 Fleetguard
Fuel: FF5260 Fleetguard
KM2A Transmission:
Input shaft bearing NSK 32005XJ OD ~ 49mm
Output shaft bearing NACHI 07087Y OD ~ 53mm
Input shaft seal NOK AC1314A ID 25mm OD 39mm
Output shaft seal KOYO-OR Mh5A 30445 ID 35mm OD 55mm
CW Pump (raw water cooled):
Bearings: NSK 6200ZZCM NS7S 605
Seal: NOK AEO279A
Impeller: Johnson 09-806B-1
Belt: Mitsubishi 10x445 M17.5

Aerosil is just the brand name for fumed silica, the same place also sells cabosil which is just a different brand of the same stuff. Bote Cote and West systems are just boutique epoxy suppliers that buy in bulk and sell the same stuff in small packets for a heavy mark up. The local epoxy mixer here is probably supplying other suppliers under different labels. Just before Christmas, I had to buy epoxy in small containers {for the same price] because they had a shipment leaving and did not want to decant some just for me, they just wanted to close up for Christmas. At the same time, I was trying to buy some cloth from trojan but it took several days for them to answer an email!
Diy-composite- supplies on eBay, however, are very competitive on price and surprisingly fast delivery.

I've bought some of their Platinum epoxy which is I suspect the same as our local mixers product but 2/3 of the price and with out the hassle of driving out to Flinders industrial.

Have found this at Bunnings (Nitto tapes 10mx19mm $19.50) to be equivalent in service to Rubbaweld (5mx25mm $24.95).

www.bunnings.com.au/nitto-denko-19mm-x-10m-no-15-self-fusing-tape_p4430729

RS have this which is even better value; have not used it.

au.rs-online.com/web/p/self-amalgamating-tapes/1468998/?ef_id=EAIaIQobChMI2MzX84-47gIVwwRyCh2RkgU0EAYYASABEgKvO_D_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!8733!3!434583992319!!!g!329349808202!&cm_mmc=AU-PLA-DS3A-_-google-_-PLA_AU_EN_Adhesives_%26_Sealants_%26_Tapes_Whoop-_-(AU:Whoop!)+Self+Amalgamating+Tapes-_-1468998&matchtype=&pla-329349808202&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2MzX84-47gIVwwRyCh2RkgU0EAYYASABEgKvO_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Have used for electrics, rope ends, wrapping ladder tiller extension rungs. Rubbaweld seems to be the only one available in white - but it soon gets dirty as expected.

Supplier: www.stainlesscentral.com.au/about-us/
Price: As per items
Comments: Excellent supplier of stainless fasteners and hardware including the high strength Bumax A4-80 grade bolts and matching grade nuts and washers. 800MPa tensile strength fasteners in the 316 material. See their website they stock a wide range of other marine and general stainless components. Very knowledgeable supplier.

Don't forget RTM has quite a reasonable range of boating hardware all of which is cheaper than Whitworths. Even Bunnings has a small range of 316 shackles and turnbuckles ... which I availed myself of today. I think it's very important to support both these places by looking there first and buying if possible as otherwise we will be faced with a Whitworths Monopoly as if it isn't bad enough already.

I searched high and low when I redid my mounts about 4 years ago and ended up getting Trelleborg Cushyfloats from Hancock Industrial at a great price. One advantage with those mounts is their lower profile, which helped avoid cutting into the mounting beds.

Bolted down my new bow roller set up today. Made from 316 stainless and bolted to a bronze stem. I used a titanium bolt and a bed of JB Weld. Titanium stuff is pretty reasonable now.

Hmm, see my post re RTM, in the Arnold's fail thread. That said I agree wholeheartedly in supporting specialists suppliers ie Yamba pump shop Wide range of hoses clamps etc, next door is the stainless shop again only stock quality. Whitworths stock and sell the same dodgy products as the competition. And have done since the "cash on delivery "' days

Comments: The Arborist ropes have a beefier cover to resist chafe, I used this to rig a drogue setup. This seller supplies an Australian Certificate of Testing for the product. I found a similar product for a similar price on ebay, but the seller ran for the hills when I asked about certification. Good to deal with.
